This senior photo session with Paige in downtown Lancaster includes some of my favorite elements to photograph: dance and colorful murals, and here are the results! I am always on the lookout for new murals in Lancaster City (there are a lot of them and new ones going up all the time!). If you are a color loving type like myself, I am more than happy to offer my suggestions and knowledge of the many fabulous murals we have around town. If you’d like to check them out yourself, here’s a link to an article by Lancaster Newspapers that maps out 50 of them. We started out by one of the newer Lancaster City murals at Rachel’s Cafe and Creperie and then went to a more secluded mural painted on a home on N. Mary Street.
It can be challenging trying to come up with a variety of angles and poses using a colorful mural as a backdrop when you have to work around parked cars, narrow alleys and telephone poles/wires. Besides taking some close-up portraits and far away shots that show the entire mural, I like to get angles taken from straight on and also from the side.
After murals we switched gears to dance! Paige is a very talented dancer so we knew we had to incorporate her skills and what better location than a parking garage rooftop at golden hour? The way her dress moves and floats in the air is just stunning. I took a lot of these images backlit with the sun behind her so that the light filtered through the tulle of her skirt. There is something quite beautiful about the movement of her soft flowy delicate light pink dress contrasted with the textured hard concrete edges and lines of the parking garage rooftop. While I would not consider myself a professional dancer by any means, I’ve taken various types of dance classes throughout my life and it is something I love to do and therefore photograph as well.
